How We Build With You

At Roots ADU, we don’t believe in “one size fits all.” We are builders, planners, and neighbors who have designed a process that puts clarity, communication, and integrity at the center of every project.

Building a backyard home should feel exciting—not overwhelming. Here’s how we make that happen.

Step 1: Figure Out What’s Possible

Before spending a dime on design or permits, we start by understanding what your property and your town will actually allow. That means walking the lot, studying the zoning code, and talking through what you want this space to be.

 

What we can do together:

  • Walk your property and kick around ideas

  • Talk through what you are hoping to build

  • Review your town’s zoning rules

  • Dig into utility connections, slopes, tree-clearing, driveways—you name it

  • Deliver a plain-English report on what’s doable

We don’t sell you a dream. We tell you what’s real—and what it would take to pull it off.

Step 2: Plan It Right, Price It Honestly

Once we know what’s allowed, we move into design and planning. This is where we turn ideas into a real project—with real numbers, timelines, and paperwork.

 

What happens in this phase:

  • You’ll get a custom project plan, with a clear breakdown of what your deposit covers

  • We help you place the unit for privacy, light, and smart access

  • You choose a design path, then tweak the layout or finishes to match your goals

  • We handle all permitting, paperwork, and town communication

  • If there’s a public hearing, we’ll represent you there too

And here’s the key: once we agree on the plan, we give you clear pricing options. Not an estimate. A real number. We will work with you to stay within your budget. 

Step 3: Build your Custom ADU

This is where sketches turn into square footage. Once permits are in, we move fast.

Off-Site Build (3–6 months)
We order your ADU from our off-site construction partner. Building off-site means fewer delays, tighter quality control, less construction mess and a home that shows up 90% finished.

Site Prep (2-4 weeks)
We prep your lot, pour the foundation, and run all the utility connections.

Set Day (2 days)
Day 1: Delivery.
Day 2: Crane sets the unit and we make it watertight.

Finish Work (4–8 weeks)
We wrap up everything from siding and paint to custom floors, tile, or trim—depending on your design. You’ll be surprised how fast it all comes together.
